Your Click Data Lives on a Domain You Don't Own

September 28, 2026 · 4 min read · By Growth7

Hover over a link in the last campaign you sent. If the status bar shows something like t.sendmail-cdn.io/r/a7Fq2x, that link doesn't belong to you. It belongs to whichever platform sent the email, and it will keep working exactly as long as your contract does. The day you switch tools, every link in every message you have ever sent goes dead — including the ones still sitting in inboxes, still being forwarded, still being clicked.

That's the visible version of a bigger problem. Open tracking, click tracking and unsubscribe handling are the three places where your marketing data is actually created, and in most stacks all three run on infrastructure you rent by the month.

What Tracking Actually Is

Strip away the dashboards and email tracking is simple plumbing. An open is a one-pixel image request to a server. A click is a redirect: the recipient hits the tracking server, it logs the event, then forwards them to your real page. An unsubscribe is a hosted form that writes a suppression record somewhere.

Every one of those events is a row in a log file. The question that matters is whose log file. When the pixel, the redirect and the unsubscribe form all live on your vendor's domain, the raw behavioral record of your audience lives there too. You get a rendered summary of it through their reporting screens. You do not get the underlying events, and you rarely get them in a form that survives a migration.

Growth7 self-hosts open, click and unsubscribe tracking for exactly this reason. It is not a feature that demos well. It is the difference between owning your engagement history and borrowing it.

Three Things That Break When Tracking Isn't Yours

  • Link permanence. Archived emails, forwarded messages and links pasted into a shared doc all route through the vendor's redirect. Leave the vendor and they resolve to nothing — or worse, to a parked domain someone else picked up.
  • Sender reputation. Shared tracking domains are shared with every other sender on the platform. If someone on that domain runs a sloppy list, the filters that learn to distrust the domain are learning to distrust your links too. You inherit a reputation you had no part in building.
  • Scoring continuity. Engagement scoring is only as good as the event history behind it. If your opens and clicks reset to zero every time you change tools, your scores start from scratch and your sales team goes back to working leads in the order they arrived.

The third one is the quiet killer for operators running multiple brands. A score that reflects behavior across email, SMS, voice and social is a compound asset — it gets more useful the longer it accumulates. Rebuilding it every eighteen months is like resetting a credit history.

What Ownership Looks Like in Practice

Self-hosted tracking means the pixel and the redirect run on your infrastructure, under a domain associated with your brand. The click log is a table you can query, not a chart you can screenshot. Unsubscribes write to a suppression record held at the platform level, so a person who opts out of email is honored when the SMS campaign and the voice sequence go out — not just in the channel where they clicked.

For agencies and operators, this extends into tenant separation. Each brand gets its own tracking, its own suppression state, its own event history, without bleeding into the account next door. One client's deliverability problem stays that client's problem.

And because the events are first-party, they are available to anything you point at them. Growth7's MCP connection lets an AI assistant query the actual platform — real contacts, real engagement, real campaign state — rather than guessing from a pasted summary. That only works if the data is somewhere you control.

The Question to Ask Any Vendor

Before you sign anything, ask three things: what domain will my tracking links use, who else sends on it, and what happens to the event logs when I leave. The answers take a minute. The consequences last as long as your list does.
