Which Marketing Produced Our Last Ten Customers?

June 15, 2026 · 4 min read · By Growth7

It is a fair question and it should be easy. In most businesses it is not, and adding a dashboard does not fix it.

The reason is that the send and the outcome live in different systems. Email knows who opened. The CRM knows who bought. Nothing joins them, so the join gets made by hand, badly, once a quarter.

Track the event to the thing that caused it

Every send, open, and click recorded against the campaign that produced it is not an analytics feature. It is a data-model decision. Once a click belongs to a campaign, and a campaign belongs to an audience, the question stops requiring a reconstruction.

Opens are imperfect — image proxies and privacy features inflate them, and anyone quoting open rates to two decimal places is overselling. Clicks and replies are the honest signals. Both are recorded per send.

Let engagement decide the audience

The more useful move is to feed the numbers back in.

Scoring runs automatically on engagement; the threshold is yours to set. Leads that keep engaging earn their way into the audience. The ones that never open anything stop being mailed — which protects your sending reputation as much as it sharpens the list.

That is the loop worth having. Not a prettier chart of what happened, but a list that improves because of what happened.

The test again

Open the campaign. Look at the last thirty days. If you can see which sends produced replies and which produced silence, you can make the next decision on evidence.

If it still takes three tools and a spreadsheet, the dashboard was never the problem.
